What is Mugler?
Mugler is a Paris house known for powerful, sculpted silhouettes and theatrical fashion shows, as well as for some of the best-selling fragrances of recent decades. Its fashion and fragrance activities sit within L'Oréal's luxury division.
History
Manfred Thierry Mugler launched his label in the 1970s and opened his first Paris boutique in 1978. The fragrance Angel, launched in 1992, became one of the best-selling perfumes of the 20th century. The house staged memorable shows in the 1990s, including a 1995 couture show at the Cirque d'Hiver.
Clarins took a 34% stake in 1990 and raised it to 83.5% in 1997. Clarins closed the ready-to-wear line in 2003 while keeping the profitable fragrance business, and Mugler himself left fashion in 2002. Fashion returned with Nicola Formichetti (2010 to 2013) and David Koma, and Casey Cadwallader, named creative director in December 2017, gave the brand renewed visibility. L'Oréal acquired Mugler from Clarins in 2019. Thierry Mugler died in 2022. Miguel Castro Freitas was appointed creative director in March 2025.
Products and positioning
Mugler is a luxury brand in which fragrance generates most of the scale while fashion builds the image:
- Angel (1992) and its many flankers
- A*Men (1996) and Alien (2005)
- Women's ready-to-wear with corsetry and bodywear
- Accessories and menswear pieces
Business model and distribution
Fragrances are distributed globally through L'Oréal's luxury network of perfumeries and department stores. Fashion is sold through the brand's website, selected retailers and department stores. Wikipedia reports that Angel and Alien together generate about $280 million in annual sales, without a specific year.
Why it matters
Mugler is a clear example of a beauty group owning a fashion house to strengthen a fragrance franchise. Its revival in the late 2010s showed how a strong archive and digital visibility can relaunch a dormant ready-to-wear line.
