What is Courrèges?

Courrèges is a French fashion house associated with the youth driven, futuristic style of the 1960s: trapeze lines, short skirts, white mid calf boots and large dark glasses, with white as its signature colour. Today it offers ready-to-wear, accessories, footwear and fragrance from its base on rue François Premier in Paris.

History

André Courrèges trained as an engineer before joining Cristóbal Balenciaga in 1948, where he became Balenciaga's top assistant. He opened his own house with Coqueline Courrèges in 1961, and by 1964 he was considered one of the most original couturiers in Paris, with vinyl introduced in the Spring 1964 collection. The couture line closed in 1967 in favour of ready-to-wear, and L'Oréal acquired half the company in 1968. The founders regained control in 1994, and the house was sold to Jacques Bungert and Frédéric Torloting in 2011.

Artémis took full ownership in 2018. Nicolas Di Felice became artistic director in September 2020 and relaunched menswear in 2021; he stepped down in March 2026. Wikipedia reports that Drew Henry was appointed artistic director in 2026, with a first collection planned for September 2026.

Business model and distribution

Courrèges sells through its own boutiques, of which Wikipedia lists nine worldwide in 2026, its online store and wholesale partners. Under Artémis ownership the house has been repositioned as a contemporary luxury label drawing on its archive, with revenue reported to have doubled in 2023.

Why it matters

Courrèges is a notable example of reviving a dormant heritage house through new ownership and creative leadership. Its trajectory under Artémis also shows how the Pinault family invests in fashion outside Kering's main portfolio.
