What is Balenciaga?

Balenciaga is a Paris luxury house offering ready-to-wear, footwear, bags, accessories and couture. It is owned by Kering. Pierpaolo Piccioli, formerly of Valentino, has been creative director since July 2025, and Gianfranco Gianangeli has been chief executive since November 2024.

History

Cristóbal Balenciaga opened his first boutique in San Sebastián, Spain, in 1917 and moved to Avenue George V in Paris in 1937 after the Spanish Civil War. He became one of the most influential couturiers of the 20th century before closing the house in 1968. The brand was revived in 1986 and acquired by the Gucci Group, now Kering, in 2001. Nicolas Ghesquière led it from 1997 to 2012, followed by Alexander Wang and Demna from 2015 to 2025. In November 2022 an advertising campaign featuring children caused widespread criticism; the brand withdrew it and apologised.

Products and positioning

Balenciaga combines couture heritage with a strong footwear and accessories business. The Motorcycle bag was its first iconic handbag under Ghesquière, and the Demna years brought oversized silhouettes and sneakers to the centre of the offer. Fragrances are licensed to Coty.

Business model and distribution

The brand sells through directly operated stores and e-commerce, with Kering having reduced wholesale across its houses. Recent openings include a Tokyo flagship and a first store in Cancún in 2024.

Balenciaga and technology

In 2022 Balenciaga began accepting cryptocurrency payments in selected markets, one of the first major luxury houses to do so.

Under Demna, the house's footwear and runway spectacle made it one of the most discussed names in luxury.

Why it matters

Balenciaga was one of the main drivers of the luxury streetwear boom. Piccioli's arrival marks a return to couture-inspired design and is closely watched as part of Kering's broader creative reset.
