What is Rabanne?
Rabanne is a French fashion and fragrance house known for futuristic designs using metal, plastic and paper. Its commercial base is fragrance, with best-sellers such as 1 Million. It is owned by Puig, which Modaes reports took full control of the brand in 2000.
History
Paco Rabanne, born Francisco Rabaneda Cuervo, debuted in 1966 with twelve "unwearable" dresses made from unconventional materials. His partnership with Puig began in 1968, the same year he designed costumes for the film Barbarella. Fragrances followed with Calandre in 1969, and Puig built a perfume factory in Chartres in 1976.
Julien Dossena led womenswear from 2013 and helped re-establish the fashion line. In June 2023 the house dropped "Paco" from its name to become Rabanne. Dossena announced his exit in June 2026 after 13 years, and in July 2026 Puig named Olivier Rousteing, formerly of Balmain, as creative director, with a first collection planned for March 2027. A new structure, Rabanne One Brand, now covers fashion and beauty together.
Products and positioning
Rabanne is positioned in the luxury segment, with fashion providing creative visibility and beauty generating scale:
- Womenswear built on metal mesh, chainmail and graphic shapes
- Bags such as the re-edited "le 69"
- Fragrances including Calandre, XS, 1 Million and Lady Million
Business model and distribution
Fashion is sold through the brand's own boutiques, including a store on Rue Cambon in Paris opened in 2016, e-commerce and selected retailers. Fragrances are distributed worldwide through Puig's network. Puig reported 2025 net sales of €5.042 billion, according to Modaes.
Why it matters
Rabanne is a clear example of the fragrance-led fashion model, in which a strong beauty business funds the creative side. Puig's decision to appoint one of fashion's best-known designers signals an effort to raise the fashion profile of one of its largest brands.
