What is Balmain?

Balmain is a French luxury house known for sharply structured tailoring, strong shoulders and heavy embellishment. It designs haute couture, women's and men's ready-to-wear, bags, shoes and accessories, and is owned by Mayhoola, the Qatar-backed investment company that also controls Valentino.

History

Pierre Balmain presented his first collection in 1945 and launched his first fragrance, Jolie Madame, in 1949. After his death in 1982 the house went through several phases, including a period from 1993 to 2002 when Oscar de la Renta led the design.

Olivier Rousteing was named designer in 2011 and became one of the most visible creative directors of the social media era, with collaborations including a Victoria's Secret capsule in 2017 and a Puma partnership in 2019. Mayhoola acquired Balmain in June 2016, the same year a New York flagship opened. In November 2025 Rousteing announced his departure after 14 years, and the house named Antonin Tron as creative director days later. Tron's first collection was promoted on the brand's website in 2026.

Products and positioning

Balmain sits in the luxury segment. Its range covers:

  • Haute couture and ready-to-wear for women and men
  • Bag lines such as Sphynx, Dinner at 8 and Anthem
  • Footwear and accessories, with a first accessories line launched in 2017
  • Fine jewellery, introduced in 2022
  • Beauty, hair care and fragrance through licensing partners, including a long-term agreement with Estée Lauder signed in 2022

Business model and distribution

The house operates more than 50 stores worldwide, with flagships in Paris, Tokyo, New York, London and Milan, and sells through its own e-commerce. Historically the business relied heavily on wholesale and licensing: Wikipedia cites wholesale as expected to make up about 90% of revenue in 2017, and licensing royalties as about half of income in 2012.

Why it matters

Balmain demonstrated how a heritage couture house could be rebuilt around celebrity, social media and a young creative director. The handover to Antonin Tron marks a new strategic chapter under Mayhoola's ownership.
