Who is Véronique Nichanian?

Véronique Nichanian is a French fashion designer, born in 1954, who served as artistic director of Hermès menswear for 37 years. By the time she announced her departure in October 2025 she was widely described as the longest-serving creative director in fashion. She presented her final collection, for Fall/Winter 2026, at Paris Men's Fashion Week on 24 January 2026.

Career

Nichanian graduated from the École de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne in 1976, where her training had focused on womenswear. She was hired straight from school by Nino Cerruti and spent the following years designing menswear at Cerruti, an apprenticeship in tailoring and fabrics that shaped the rest of her career.

In 1988 she joined Hermès to lead its men's ready-to-wear. According to accounts of her career, the then chairman Jean-Louis Dumas gave her considerable freedom to run the division almost as her own small enterprise. Over the following decades she built a consistent wardrobe rather than chasing seasonal trends, working closely with the house's leather, silk and textile expertise.

Her farewell show at the Palais Brongniart in Paris mixed new pieces in navy, black and taupe with archival looks from 1991 and 2003, a summary of a long body of work. Associated Press reported that she would remain with Hermès to oversee men's accessories and silk. Grace Wales Bonner, announced as her successor in October 2025, is due to present her first Hermès menswear collection in January 2027.

Influence on the fashion business

Nichanian's approach anticipated what the industry later called quiet luxury. Instead of logos or dramatic silhouettes, she focused on:

  • Exceptional materials, often developed with specialist mills
  • Subtle changes to classic menswear shapes from season to season
  • Leather and exotic skins used in tailoring and outerwear
  • Continuity, so that pieces from different years work together

This consistency suited Hermès' business model, which favours craftsmanship and long product life over fast trend cycles. It also made her one of the few women to lead menswear at a major luxury house for decades, at a time when that field was dominated by men.

Why it matters

Long creative tenures have become rare as houses change designers every few years. Nichanian's 37 years at Hermès are a case study in how a stable creative vision, rooted in product quality, can support a luxury brand's identity over the long term. Her handover to Grace Wales Bonner is one of the most closely watched succession moments in recent menswear history.
