What is Alberto Guardiani?
Alberto Guardiani is a family-owned shoe company from Italy. It was founded in 1947 in Montegranaro, a centre of fine shoemaking in the Marche region, by cousins Luigi and Dino Guardiani, starting as an artisan workshop making classic men's shoes.
History
In 1972 Alberto Guardiani, then aged twenty, took over the business after the death of his father Dino. The brand expanded internationally in the 1980s, and from the early 1990s the company also produced footwear for other fashion houses, including Jil Sander and Gianfranco Ferré. A larger factory and headquarters followed in 1998.
Products and positioning
The offer has grown from its original men's shoes into a broader range:
- Classic men's footwear
- A women's collection, first introduced in 1999
- Guardiani Sport, a line of Italian-made sneakers for men, women and children
Distribution
The first flagship store opened in Naples in 1995, followed by stores in Milan, Rome, Capri and Eastern Europe, plus showrooms in Milan and Rome. The brand is also sold through multibrand retailers and outlet centres.
Why it matters
Alberto Guardiani exemplifies the family shoemakers of the Marche district, which combine artisanal heritage with branded retail and contract manufacturing for luxury houses.
