What is Asprey?

Asprey is a British luxury house. It began in 1781 as a silk printing business in Mitcham, Surrey, founded by William Asprey, a descendant of a Huguenot family. It is headquartered in London and privately held.

History

Asprey received its first royal warrant in 1862 from Queen Victoria. It merged with Garrard in 1990 and was renamed Asprey & Garrard in 1998 after divesting several businesses. The two houses split in 2002. In 1995 the group was acquired by Prince Jefri Bolkiah's Amedeo Development Corporation, and in 2006 Sciens Capital Management and Plainfield Asset Management bought the brand. Wikipedia does not state who owns Asprey today, so no current owner is given here.

Products and positioning

The house sells jewellery, leather goods and handbags, timepieces, silver, china, crystal and books. It also makes sporting trophies. This breadth, closer to a traditional Bond Street luxury house than a pure jeweller, is part of its positioning.

Business model and distribution

The flagship store has been at 36 Bruton Street in Mayfair since late 2021. The sources reviewed do not give a full store list or a breakdown of wholesale, online and own retail sales. Wikipedia lists John Rigas as chairman, but this was not verified for 2026.

Why it matters

Asprey is among the oldest British luxury retailers and shares much of its corporate history with Garrard and Mappin & Webb. Its history of ownership changes, from a listed company to private equity to private holdings, illustrates the pressures facing heritage British houses over the past three decades.
