What is Biba?

Biba is an Indian brand of women's ethnic apparel. Warburg Pincus describes Biba Apparels as a leading designer, manufacturer and retailer of women's ethnic apparel in India, headquartered in New Delhi and aimed at mid to mid-premium income consumers for daily and evening wear.

History

Sources differ on the founding year: Warburg Pincus says Meena Bindra started it in 1986, Wikipedia's mirror gives 1982 in the history text and 1988 in the infobox, so no year is stated in the facts. Meena Bindra began the business from her New Delhi home. Her son Siddharth Bindra is described by Warburg Pincus as running the company. The first standalone Biba store opened in 2004 in Mumbai.

Ownership and investment

Warburg Pincus lists a growth-stage investment in Biba Apparels made in 2013. The encyclopaedia entry adds that Future Group acquired a 6.5 percent stake in 2007 and sold it in 2013, that Biba took a 51 percent stake in the Indian by Manish Arora brand in 2012 and a minority stake in designer label Anju Modi in 2014. It does not state current ownership, and neither source does for 2026.

Products and positioning

The range includes Indian suits (salwar kameez with dupatta), separate tops and bottoms sold as Mix n' Match, a girls' line for ages 2 to 12 and unstitched fabrics.

Business model and distribution

Warburg Pincus cites more than 300 exclusive brand outlets and approximately 500 department store outlets at the time of its investment. The encyclopaedia gives a lower, unsourced figure of more than 150 brand outlets and 225 multi-brand outlets, so store counts should be treated cautiously.

Why it matters

Biba is among the best-known Indian ethnic-wear chains and an example of how a founder-led label scaled through exclusive brand stores and department store counters with private-equity support.
