What is Pantaloons?

Pantaloons is an Indian fashion retailer operating department-style stores. It is the main retail chain of Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail (ABFRL), which is headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra.

History

The chain opened its first store in 1997 in Gariahat, Kolkata. It was previously controlled by the Future Group. Aditya Birla Nuvo acquired major stakes in Pantaloons in 2012, and the company was renamed Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail in 2015. ABFRL's Madura business, which owns brands such as Louis Philippe, Van Heusen, Allen Solly and Peter England, was demerged into Aditya Birla Lifestyle Brands Limited with effect from 1 May 2025, leaving Pantaloons as the main retail chain of ABFRL.

Products and positioning

Pantaloons sells apparel and accessories for men, women and children. Wikipedia reports about 200 brands, a mix of private labels and licensed brands. The chain sits in the Indian mid-market, between value chains and premium department stores.

Business model and distribution

The sources describe physical stores in cities and towns across India and do not mention online sales, so none are claimed. A customer loyalty scheme, the Greencard programme, is reported with over 4 million members. Store counts in the sources are inconsistent and dated: 76 stores in 44 cities in November 2013, and 130 fashion stores in 40 cities and towns in another passage. ABFRL as a whole reported 1,167 or 1,273 stores as of 31 March 2026 in two passages that the source does not reconcile, so no current Pantaloons store count is stated.

Why it matters

Pantaloons shows how an Indian multi-brand fashion format passed from the Future Group to the Aditya Birla Group and then became the core of a separate retail business after the 2025 demerger. For observers of Indian apparel retail, it is a long-established alternative to value chains such as Zudio and to the department store formats of other groups.
