What is Bitte Kai Rand?
Bitte Kai Rand is a Danish fashion label. Its official site says it was founded in 1981 by the eponymous designer, fresh out of the Royal Danish Design Academy, who acquired the knitting workshop Steen's hjemmestrikkerier, described as the most prolific Danish knitting workshop of its time.
History
Early work was made to order and focused on fitting real bodies rather than standard shapes. The brand's own timeline describes sculptural shoulders and drop crotch trousers in the 1980s, designer denim and logo t-shirts in the 1990s, and play with proportions in the 2000s. Michael Rand, the designer's husband, joined the company in 1983, and real people have featured in its advertising since the 1990s.
Products and positioning
Current collections are described as clothes for real people, colourful parties, work, pleasure and play. The site lists dresses, trousers, knitwear, coats and outerwear, tops, shirts, blouses, skirts, shorts and accessories.
Distribution
The brand became well known in Danish fashion stores and was sold in department stores and design boutiques in Stockholm, Oslo, London, New York and Antwerp. Today its website ships internationally, with storefronts for Denmark, Sweden, Norway, the UK, Germany and the US.
Why it matters
With more than four decades of activity, Bitte Kai Rand is one of the longer running independent Danish womenswear labels, and it still appears at Copenhagen Fashion Week.
