What is Briko?
Briko is an Italian brand of technical sports equipment and eyewear focused on skiing and cycling. Since 2017 it has belonged to BasicNet, the Italian group that also owns Kappa, K-Way and Superga.
History
Briko was founded in 1985 by Alberto Brignone, who had previously supplied technical materials to the Italian national ski team. Its first product was ski wax, and in 1988 a Briko graphite wax compound helped Italian skiers sweep the podium in a downhill race at Leukerbad, Switzerland. Milestones followed:
- 1989: Thrama lenses, designed to reduce glare and provide UV protection
- 1992: KASKO, the first Briko cycling helmet
- Late 1990s: the aerodynamic, double moulded Twinner helmet
- 2010: the Briko Squadra Corse amateur gran fondo cycling team
Products and positioning
Today the range includes ski goggles, ski helmets, ski clothing, cycling helmets, sunglasses and cycling apparel, with later specialisation in freeriding, snowboarding and canoeing.
Why it matters
Briko's helmets and eyewear were worn by athletes including Alberto Tomba, Marco Pantani and Lindsey Vonn, giving it a strong heritage in Italian sport. Within BasicNet it adds a technical performance label to a portfolio of sportswear and lifestyle brands.
