What is Carven?
Carven is a French fashion house founded in Paris in 1945 by the couturière Marie-Louise Carven (born Carmen de Tommaso, 1909 to 2015). She opened the house on the Champs-Élysées and became known as the smallest of the big couturiers, designing for petite women.
History
According to Wikipedia, Carven was one of the first couturiers to launch prêt-à-porter, around 1950, and the first Paris designer to patent a push-up bra. The house launched a perfume in 1946, famously parachuting sample bottles across Paris, and a Carven Junior line in 1955. It designed uniforms for the 1976 French Olympic team, Eurostar staff and more than 20 airlines, and created costumes for eleven films. Its signature green and white striped summer dress remains a reference point.
Marie-Louise Carven retired in 1993, her archives were donated to the Musée Galliera in 2001, and she was made a commander of the Legion of Honour in 2009.
Ownership and leadership
FashionUnited reported in April 2026 that Carven is owned by Icicle Carven China France (ICCF), a subsidiary of the Chinese premium brand Icicle. ICCF is headed by Shawna Tao, an Icicle co-founder, and its chairman is Mr Ye, also an Icicle co-founder. Louise Trotter led the brand before leaving for Bottega Veneta. Mark Thomas joined in 2023 as senior designer and became artistic director in March 2025. He was reported to be leaving at the end of April 2026, and the company said its next steps would be announced later in the year, with the next Paris show planned for spring/summer 2027.
