What is Pierre Cardin?

Pierre Cardin is a Paris-based couture house and one of the most licensed names in fashion. It was founded by Pierre Cardin, who was born in Italy in 1922, moved to Paris in 1945 and died on 29 December 2020 at the age of 98.

History

Cardin trained as a tailor at 17 in Vichy, then worked at Paquin and Christian Dior after the Second World War, and worked with Elsa Schiaparelli before opening his own house at 10 rue Richepanse. He opened his own shop in 1950, presented his first women's haute couture collection in 1953 and opened his first boutique on rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in 1954, where he created the robe bulle. According to Britannica, he created an early women's ready-to-wear collection in 1959 and the first designer men's ready-to-wear collection in 1960. His mid-1960s designs helped define the Space Age look, alongside Courrèges and Rabanne.

Licensing model

The house pioneered the licence model in fashion, starting with a Texan distributor and then extending to the Americas and worldwide. Wikipedia reports that by the late 1970s the name appeared on over 2,000 products and that this broad licensing brought substantial revenue but eroded the brand's credibility. The brand's range now spans fashion, accessories, jewellery, perfume, furniture, theatre costumes and tableware.

Products and ownership

The brand sits between luxury heritage and mass licensing, so it is classed here as premium. Wikipedia reports that in 2011 Cardin tried to sell the business at a valuation of one billion euros but did not sell. His nephew, Rodrigo Cardin, became president in October 2020 and artistic director in December 2020, according to the official website, which also states that the house has commissioned an external audit since 2022 and is developing a CSR strategy. Wikipedia's account of the share structure is disputed and is not repeated here.

Why it matters

Pierre Cardin is the clearest historic example of a designer turning a name into a global licensing platform. Its recent work with the European Space Agency and Thales Alenia Space offcuts connects the house to the space theme it has explored since the 1960s.
