What is Duren?
Duren is a Japanese leather goods brand founded in 2013 by Masaki Matsukawa, a former model, and the stylist Kohei Okamato. It makes bags for men and women with a modern, androgynous look.
Products and positioning
The brand is best known for crinkle leather, a signature material that pairs creased leather with aluminium. According to a Sortiraparis report, the leather used comes from hides of cattle already slaughtered for the food industry. Every bag is made in workshops in Kyoto, and each design is produced in small runs of around ten pieces on average. Prices start at 160 euros.
Distribution
Duren opened its first Paris boutique in July 2018 at 37 rue Debelleyme, in the 3rd arrondissement, and also sells through an online shop.
Collaborations
- Capsule collection with the embroidery designer Emmanuelle Vernoux
- Capsule collection with the street artist Shantell Martin
- Capsule collection with Benoit Pierre Emery, designer of Hermes tableware and scarves
Why it matters
Duren is an example of a small Japanese label that built a distinct material identity and a limited-run model, and then took it to Paris with a boutique of its own.
