What is Gérard Darel?

Gérard Darel is a French ready-to-wear brand for women, also noted for its leather goods. French Wikipedia highlights the 24 Heures bag, launched around 2005, as its best-known model.

History

Gérard and Danielle Gerbi started the company in 1971. FashionUnited reported in November 2015 that the Gerbi family had sold it about seven years earlier to the US investment fund Advent for €300 million. The business declined under Advent and filed for insolvency in June 2015. The Paris Commercial Court then chose the Gerbi family's offer of just over €50 million, preferring it because it preserved about 630 jobs, ahead of bids from KKR and Chenavari.

Products and positioning

The brand sits in the premium womenswear segment with a strong focus on accessories. French Wikipedia states that it reached revenue of about €200 million in 2014.

Business model and distribution

The brand historically operated its own shops alongside wholesale and online channels. French Wikipedia states that the operating company at the time of the later insolvency, Design Sportswears, was placed into liquidation, and that distribution was then handled by The Other Store in Paris, which is described as having no legal or financial link to the previous entity. The date and current ownership are not given in that source, so we do not state a current group owner.

Why it matters

Gérard Darel illustrates how quickly mid-sized French fashion businesses can be affected by leveraged ownership and shifting retail demand, and how family founders sometimes return to rescue their own brands.
