What is Halston?
Halston is an American apparel and accessories brand that originated with the designer known as Halston. He became the first superstar designer in the United States, and his clothing, closely linked to Studio 54, defined 1970s American fashion.
History
Roy Halston Frowick was born in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1932 and trained as a milliner. He gained attention in 1961 for the pillbox hat worn by Jacqueline Kennedy at her husband's inauguration, showed his first clothing collection at Bergdorf Goodman in 1966 and launched the Halston Limited ready to wear line in 1969.
In 1973 he sold the business to Norton Simon Inc. for 16 million US dollars while remaining principal designer. Esmark acquired Halston Limited in 1983, and the label later changed hands several times, including ownership by Playtex International and Beatrice Foods. A six year licensing deal with J.C. Penney for the Halston III line, signed in 1983, damaged the brand's luxury image. He was removed from the company in 1984, Revlon acquired Halston Enterprises in 1986, and in 1990 Revlon discontinued the clothing line while keeping the fragrances. Halston died that year. A 2019 documentary and a 2021 Netflix miniseries revived interest in his work.
Business model and distribution
In July 2022 Xcel Brands announced the appointment of Ken Downing, formerly of Neiman Marcus, as creative director, effective 1 August 2022. The announcement described Halston as an American brand producing and distributing apparel and accessories, with a strategy centred on live selling through livestreaming platforms, and said the label was sold through retailers including Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue and Bloomingdale's. The sources reviewed do not confirm who owns Halston in 2026 or whether Downing remains in the role.
Why it matters
Halston is a classic case study in how a designer name can outlive its founder through licensing and repeated changes of ownership. Its history is often cited in discussions about mass licensing and brand dilution in American fashion.
