What is Coach?

Coach is a New York fashion house best known for leather handbags and accessories, complemented by ready to wear and footwear. It is the core brand of Tapestry, Inc., the listed group formerly called Coach, Inc., which renamed itself in 2017 after acquiring Kate Spade.

History

Coach began in 1941 as a family run leather workshop in Manhattan making wallets and billfolds by hand. Lillian and Miles Cahn joined in the 1940s and bought the company in 1961. Designer Bonnie Cashin, creative head from 1962 to 1974, introduced the side pockets, brighter colours and silver toggle hardware that became brand codes. The Cahns sold the business to Sara Lee in 1985, and Coach was spun off with an initial public offering in 2000.

Stuart Vevers, formerly of Loewe and Mulberry, joined as creative director in 2013 and has repositioned the brand around Americana, nostalgia and a younger audience. Tapestry acquired Stuart Weitzman in 2015 and Kate Spade in 2017; an attempt to acquire Capri Holdings was abandoned in 2024 after a US court blocked it.

Products and positioning

Coach sells handbags, small leather goods, ready to wear, footwear and accessories at accessible luxury prices. Eyewear is licensed to Luxottica and fragrances to Interparfums. In 2021 the brand launched (Re)Loved, a resale and upcycling programme, and in 2023 it introduced Coachtopia, a line built around circular materials.

Business model and distribution

  • Own stores: directly operated full price and outlet stores worldwide, the first opened on Madison Avenue in 1981
  • Wholesale: department store shop-in-shops, starting with Macy's in 1986
  • E-commerce: coach.com since 1999, with a stronger digital focus from 2020
  • Licensing: eyewear and fragrance

Why it matters

Coach is one of the clearest turnaround stories in American fashion. Its success with younger consumers has made it the main source of growth for Tapestry, and its resale and circular programmes are often cited as examples of how a mass scale accessories brand can test new business models.
