What is Lurchi?
Lurchi is a children's footwear brand from Germany. Its name comes from Lurchi, a fire salamander comic figure created in 1937 for the German shoe manufacturer Salamander, whose company was based in Kornwestheim.
History
The Lurchi booklets were originally handed out in shoe shops to keep children entertained while their parents were being advised. The comic series for primary school age children became widely known, and since 2008 the publisher Esslinger Verlag J. F. Schreiber has held the rights to reprints of the booklets. The figure still has a devoted adult fan base.
Products and positioning
The brand's philosophy is that children's feet should be able to move freely. The current range includes:
- Sneakers and low shoes
- Sandals
- Boots, rain boots and waterproof TEX models
- Barefoot shoes
- Baby shoes
Distribution
Lurchi shoes are sold through the brand's own online shop, which is operated by Supremo Shoes, and through shoe retailers. A separate website, Lurchis Welt, is dedicated to the comic figure.
Why it matters
Lurchi is one of the best known examples of character driven marketing in European footwear, turning a promotional comic into a long lasting children's shoe brand.
