What is Maria Black?
Maria Black is a Copenhagen jewellery brand where every piece is designed in-house. Its aesthetic moves between fluid shapes and bold modernity, and it has been gender-inclusive since its launch.
History
Founder Maria Black began making jewellery around 2003 while living in Ibiza, then moved to London, where she sold handmade pieces at Sunday Upmarket in East London. Stores and agents picked up her work, and after graduating as a goldsmith in 2009 she founded the brand in 2010.
Products and positioning
- Seasonal silver jewellery, with selected styles moving into a permanent core collection
- A core 14k gold piercing line and in-store piercing services
- Signature pieces such as Brainjelly earrings, the Atlas necklace and Vesta stacking rings
All silver and gold production uses recycled metals, and lab-grown diamonds replaced natural diamonds across the collection in 2021. A gold sourcing programme developed with the Fairtrade Foundation sources part of its gold from Fairtrade miners.
Distribution
The brand runs its own stores in Copenhagen, Aarhus, Berlin, Oslo and Tokyo and is sold in more than 30 markets through retail partners and online.
Why it matters
Maria Black is a leading example of the Scandinavian demi-fine jewellery wave, pairing a piercing-led retail experience with material sourcing commitments.
