What is Mary Katrantzou?

Mary Katrantzou is a designer womenswear label based in London and led by its founder, the Athens-born designer Mary Katrantzou (born 1983). The brand is known for digital print, embellishment and unique, highly decorative designs. Its first ready-to-wear collection was shown at London Fashion Week, with sources giving autumn/winter 2008 or February 2009.

History

The label received British Fashion Council NEWGEN sponsorship for six seasons from spring/summer 2009 to autumn/winter 2011 and gained show status in autumn/winter 2009. A Topshop collection launched in 2011 and reportedly sold out within days. Other collaborations include a Longchamp bag capsule in 2012 and an adidas clothing and footwear project announced in 2014.

Katrantzou won the Swiss Textiles Award in 2010, the British Fashion Award for Emerging Talent in womenswear in 2011 and a share of the BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund in 2015, which included a grant of 200,000 pounds. The label marked its tenth anniversary at The Roundhouse in London in 2018 and staged its spring/summer 2020 show in Athens at the Temple of Poseidon.

Business model and distribution

Wikipedia reports that the collection was sold in more than 200 shops across 47 countries, including Selfridges, Harvey Nichols, Barneys, Neiman Marcus, Net-a-Porter and Mytheresa. The brand also sells online through its own website and lists stockists there. In October 2017 Katrantzou sold a minority stake to Yu Capital, the investment arm of Hong Kong based Yu Holdings, with terms undisclosed.

Products and positioning

The current website presents Resort 2027 alongside recent seasons, with spring/summer 2026 drawing on table linens, ceramics and glassware for trompe l'oeil prints. In April 2024 the designer was appointed Bulgari's first creative director for leather goods and accessories.

Why it matters

Mary Katrantzou is one of the best-known designer names to emerge from the NEWGEN scheme and a leading example of print-led design in London. Current ownership beyond the 2017 minority investment could not be verified.
