What is Mayoral?

Mayoral is a Spanish children's fashion brand covering babies, girls and boys from birth to age 16. It is the main brand of the Mayoral Group, a family owned textile company headquartered in Málaga that designs, manufactures, distributes and markets its own collections. The group also owns the brands Abel&Lula, Boston and Hug&Clau.

History

The group traces its roots to 1941, when a sock and tights business called Domínguez Toledo was set up in Yunquera, in the province of Málaga. The current parent company, Mayoral Moda Infantil, was founded in the early 1970s and turned the business towards complete children's collections. Over the following decades Mayoral expanded abroad through subsidiaries in markets including France, Portugal, Mexico, Poland, the United States and China.

Products and positioning

Mayoral is positioned in the mid-market, offering fashionable yet accessible children's clothing. Its range includes:

  • Newborn and babywear
  • Girls' and boys' clothing up to age 16
  • Ceremony and occasion wear
  • Shoes and accessories

Business model and distribution

Mayoral combines a large wholesale business with own retail and franchising. According to FashionUnited, the group has around 9,000 points of sale worldwide, subsidiaries in 23 countries and about 2,200 employees, and targeted 400 own physical points of sale for 2025. Spanish Wikipedia reports a commercial presence in 75 countries and a network of commercial agents on five continents. The brand also sells through its own international e-commerce.

In 2024 group sales fell 7.5 percent to 370 million euros, from 400 million euros in 2023, according to FashionUnited.

Why it matters

Mayoral is one of Europe's largest childrenswear specialists and a leading example of a family owned Spanish fashion company built on wholesale. Its broad international distribution makes it a key player in multi brand children's retail, while its recent sales decline reflects the pressures of falling birth rates and weaker demand.
