What is Primark?
Primark is a value retailer selling clothing, footwear, accessories, beauty and homeware at very low prices. It is part of Associated British Foods, the London-listed group controlled by the Weston family through Wittington Investments. Eoin Tonge, ABF's former finance director, has led Primark since 2025, first as interim chief executive after Paul Marchant resigned in March 2025 and as permanent chief executive since 2026.
History
Arthur Ryan opened the first Penneys store on Mary Street in Dublin in June 1969, with backing from the Weston family. A 1976 settlement with the US retailer JCPenney restricted the Penneys name to Ireland, so the chain trades as Primark elsewhere. It expanded across the UK and then into Spain, Germany and other European markets, opening its first US store in Boston in 2015. In April 2013 the collapse of the Rana Plaza factory complex in Bangladesh, which produced for Primark and other brands, killed 1,134 people; Primark became the largest single contributor to compensation. In April 2026 ABF announced that Primark would be demerged before the end of 2027, with Wittington Investments planning to keep a majority stake in both companies.
Products and positioning
Primark offers fashion and basics for the whole family alongside beauty, homeware and licensed character merchandise. Its pricing places it firmly in the value segment, competing with discounters and online-only players.
Business model and distribution
Primark has historically relied almost entirely on physical stores, with large shops in city centres and little paid advertising. It had around 495 stores in 19 countries in mid-2026, including more than 180 in the UK and 43 in the US. It added click and collect from 2022, launched an app in 2025 and has announced home delivery in Britain. In the 24 weeks to 28 February 2026, ABF reported retail revenue of 4.7 billion pounds.
Why it matters
Primark shows that a store-led, low-price model can scale across Europe without full e-commerce. Its upcoming separation from ABF will create one of Europe's largest listed fashion retailers and make its strategy, margins and US expansion more visible to investors.

Why is Primark called Penneys in Ireland?
Primark was founded in Dublin in 1969 as Penneys. A 1976 trademark settlement with the US retailer JCPenney limited the Penneys name to the Republic of Ireland, so the chain trades as Primark in other countries.
