What is Sophie Hong?
Sophie Hong is the label of Taiwanese designer Sophie Hong (Hong Li-fen), often described as one of Taiwan's most original and pioneering fashion designers. The brand operates a flagship store and studio in Taipei and a boutique in Paris.
History
Sophie Hong graduated from Shih Chien College, now Shih Chien University. Alongside her own collections she has designed costumes for performing arts groups including U Theater, Taipei Dance Circle and the TTT Puppet Center, and has worked with artists such as Lo Man-fei and Zhu Ming.
Products and positioning
The label makes loose, comfortable and cosmopolitan clothing that combines modern Western cuts with Eastern aesthetics inspired by ink painting and calligraphy. A signature is naturally dyed silk produced with techniques dating to the Ming Dynasty, coloured with yam juice and grass and sun-dried over several months. The designer also creates jewellery resembling sculpture and installation-style works.
- Naturally dyed silk garments
- Sculptural jewellery
- Costume design for theatre and dance
Why it matters
Sophie Hong has long championed non-toxic, natural dyeing, making the label an early Asian reference point for craft-based, lower-impact fashion and for the overlap between fashion and art.
