What is Spring Court?
Spring Court is a French footwear brand known for canvas tennis shoes. Founded in 1936, it remains run by the Grimmeisen family.
History
Founder Georges Grimmeisen, a tennis enthusiast with a background in rubber making, created a ventilated shoe in cotton canvas and vulcanised rubber designed for clay courts. The shoe was adopted by players including Lew Hoad, Rod Laver, Björn Borg and Ilie Năstase, and later by figures beyond sport such as John Lennon, who wore it on the Abbey Road cover and at his 1969 wedding, David Hockney and Jane Birkin.
In the 1990s production moved from Paris to the Vendée region and the brand was licensed to Rautureau Apple Shoes. The Th. Grimmeisen company took back development in 2014, and a third generation of the family, Florence, Laura and Théodora, has led the brand since 2020.
