What is Tanner Krolle?

Tanner Krolle is a London luxury leather goods brand. Its range covers leather bags, luggage, small leather goods and bespoke trunks, including watch, jewellery and drinks trunks. Its Townhouse store is at 70 Cadogan Place in Belgravia.

History

The house goes back to 1856 and Frederick Franz Krolle. In the 1920s the business moved into the premises of R.T. Tanner and Co. and became Tanner and Company. The Dorset Rise building was destroyed by bombing and fire in 1940 and records were lost. Tanner Krolle and Co. Ltd. was formed in 1956 after the acquisition of J.D. Watts.

Ownership and relaunch

Chanel acquired the company in the early 1990s, with Alain Wertheimer presiding over the deal, and a private equity group acquired it in 2003. The brand was relaunched in late 2019. The source consulted does not name the current owner, so none is stated here.

Products and distribution

Earlier product lines included zip suitcases, Pullman bags, attache and document cases, equestrian accessories and military leather and canvas equipment. Historically the brand was sold through department stores such as Harrods, Fortnum and Mason, Selfridges and Dickins and Jones, through US retailers including Saks and Brooks, and by export to continental Europe. Today its London Townhouse is the physical base.

Why it matters

Tanner Krolle is one of the oldest names in British luxury leather goods and an example of a heritage house that changed hands several times, including a period under Chanel, before its relaunch. Leadership and financial details were not verified and are omitted.
