What is a CDP (customer data platform) in fashion?

A customer data platform, software that unifies customer data from many sources into single profiles that marketing and other systems can use.

In short

A CDP, or customer data platform, is software that collects customer data from many channels and combines it into a single, up-to-date profile per person. Fashion brands and retailers use it to create segments, personalise marketing and recommendations, and share consistent customer data with other systems.

How does it work in practice?

The CDP ingests events and records from sources such as the e-commerce platform, point-of-sale system, app, loyalty programme and email tool. Identity resolution links records that belong to the same person, for example an online account and a loyalty card used in store. Marketing teams then define segments, such as customers who bought outerwear last winter but not this season, and the CDP sends these segments to email, advertising and onsite personalisation tools.

Why does it matter for fashion businesses?

Fashion customers move between stores, websites, marketplaces and social channels. Without a unified view, a brand might send a discount on a product the customer has already bought, or miss that an online customer is also a top store client. A CDP helps make better use of first-party data. For brands mainly selling wholesale, a CDP is usually smaller in scope, focused on direct channels.

How is AI changing it?

Many CDPs now include predictive features such as churn scores, next-best product and expected customer lifetime value. Generative AI lets marketers describe a segment in plain language instead of building filters manually. CDPs are also increasingly built on top of the company's data warehouse, so data is not copied into yet another system.

Common pitfalls

  • Buying a CDP before defining the use cases it should support.
  • Poor data quality at source, which the CDP cannot fix on its own.
  • Unclear ownership between marketing, IT and data teams.
  • Overlapping functions with existing CRM and marketing automation tools.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a CDP and a CRM?

A CRM manages relationships and interactions, often entered by staff, such as service or sales activities. A CDP automatically collects behavioural and transactional data from many sources and unifies it for analysis and activation.

Does a fashion brand need a CDP?

It depends on the number of direct channels and customers. Brands with significant e-commerce, retail stores and loyalty programmes usually benefit most, while wholesale-focused brands may need a lighter solution.
