What are trims in fashion?

All the components of a garment other than the main fabric, such as buttons, zips, labels, thread, linings and packaging.

In short

Trims are all the materials in a garment besides the main fabric, including buttons, zips, thread, labels, interlinings, linings, elastics, hangtags and packaging. They affect a product's appearance, durability and cost, and they must be specified, sourced and approved just like the shell fabric.

How does it work in practice?

Designers and product developers list every trim in the tech pack and the bill of materials, with size, colour, finish, supplier and placement. Some brands nominate trim suppliers so that branded items such as woven labels and metal hardware look the same across all factories. Others leave sourcing of generic items, like thread, to the garment maker.

  • Functional: zips, buttons, snaps, elastics, thread
  • Structural: interlinings, shoulder pads, linings
  • Informational: care labels, size labels, hangtags, barcodes
  • Decorative: badges, embroidery, branded hardware

Why does it matter for fashion businesses?

A garment cannot ship if a single trim is missing, so late trims are a common cause of delayed deliveries. Trims also matter for compliance: care and composition labels must reflect the actual product, and barcodes on hangtags must match the master data used by retailers. For premium brands, the quality of hardware and labels is part of the perceived value.

How is AI changing it?

AI tools can read tech packs and BOMs to check that every trim is specified consistently, flagging missing colours or conflicting placements. Image recognition helps match a new trim request with existing approved components in a library, which reduces unnecessary new development. Forecasting models can also plan trim volumes across styles so that common items are bought in efficient quantities.

Common pitfalls

Brands often underestimate trim lead times and minimum order quantities, especially for custom branded items. Specifying a different zip or button for every style multiplies complexity. A curated trim library with approved, reusable components keeps cost and risk under control.

Frequently asked questions

Are labels and hangtags considered trims?

Yes. Care labels, size labels, brand labels and hangtags are all classified as trims and are usually listed in the bill of materials.

Who sources trims, the brand or the factory?

It varies. Brands often nominate suppliers for branded or critical trims to ensure consistency, while factories frequently source generic items such as thread or polybags themselves.
