What is UGC in fashion?

User-generated content: photos, videos, reviews and posts about a brand or product created by customers rather than the brand.

In short

UGC, or user-generated content, is any content about a fashion brand or product that is created by customers or fans rather than by the brand itself. It includes outfit photos, try-on and haul videos, reviews and social posts, which brands can reuse with permission to inspire and reassure other shoppers.

How does it work in practice?

Customers share content on social platforms, often tagging the brand or using a campaign hashtag, and leave ratings and reviews on webshops and marketplaces. Brands collect this content with social listening or UGC platforms, ask creators for permission to reuse it and then display it in galleries on product pages, in emails, in-store screens and paid social ads. Some brands actively encourage UGC through challenges, post-purchase emails or loyalty points.

The line between UGC and influencer content is fluid. Brands also commission creators to produce content in an authentic, customer-like style, which is often still described as UGC, although it is paid and should be disclosed as such.

Why does it matter for fashion businesses?

Shoppers want to see how clothes look on different body types, in everyday settings and under natural light. UGC answers that need in a way studio images cannot. It can increase confidence on the PDP, help customers choose the right size and supply a steady stream of social content at relatively low cost. Reviews also feed product teams with direct feedback on fit and quality.

How is AI changing it?

AI tools scan social platforms to find relevant posts, identify the products shown with computer vision, filter inappropriate content and summarise reviews into fit and quality insights. At the same time, generative AI makes it easier to produce synthetic "customer-style" content, which raises authenticity and disclosure risks.

Common pitfalls

  • Reusing customer photos without explicit permission or proper credit.
  • Showcasing only perfect content, which undermines authenticity.
  • Ignoring negative reviews instead of feeding them back to design and sourcing.

Frequently asked questions

Can brands use customer photos from social media?

Brands should only reuse customer content after getting explicit permission from the creator, usually through a direct request or a rights management tool. Using it without consent can breach copyright and platform terms.

Is paid creator content still UGC?

It is often called UGC because it looks like customer content, but it is commissioned by the brand. It should be treated and disclosed as advertising.
