Who is Alberta Ferretti?

Alberta Ferretti was born in 1950 in Gradara and is based in Cattolica on Italy's Adriatic coast. Her designs are known for light chiffon, delicate draping and a soft, feminine elegance. Beyond design, she is one of the founders of a significant Italian fashion manufacturing and brand group.

Career

In 1968 Ferretti opened a boutique called Jolly in Cattolica. She designed her first collection in the early 1970s and began showing in Milan in 1981. With her brother Massimo she co-founded Aeffe, which grew into a publicly traded group producing and distributing luxury brands.

  • 1968: opens the Jolly boutique in Cattolica
  • 1981: first runway show in Milan
  • 1989: launches a diffusion line that later became Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti
  • 17 September 2024: final runway show for her namesake label
  • 24 September 2024: announces she is stepping down as creative director

In September 2024 Ferretti announced that she was stepping down as creative director of her namesake brand after her show in Milan that month, describing the move as the right and conscious choice to open a new creative chapter. At the time Aeffe said she would continue as vice president of the group, and she has retained a seat on its board.

Influence on the fashion business

Aeffe is an example of the Italian model in which design houses are backed by their own industrial production. Besides Alberta Ferretti, the group has owned brands including Moschino, which it fully controls, Pollini and Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini. Lorenzo Serafini has led the Philosophy line since 2014, and from autumn 2025 Philosophy was integrated into the Alberta Ferretti line.

Ferretti's long tenure, from her first Milan show in 1981 to her final collection in 2024, made her one of the most consistent voices in Italian womenswear, with a signature of chiffon, draping and eveningwear that remained recognisable across more than four decades.

Why it matters

Alberta Ferretti's career shows how an Italian designer can combine creative work with industrial ownership, building a group that manufactures and distributes several brands. Her succession at her own label is part of a wider transition in Italy from founder-designers to new creative teams.
