What is Alberta Ferretti?
Alberta Ferretti is an Italian womenswear house specialising in fluid, feminine dresses, chiffon and eveningwear. It is the founding brand of Aeffe S.p.A., based in San Giovanni in Marignano near Rimini, which also owns Moschino and Pollini.
History
Alberta Ferretti opened her first boutique in Cattolica in 1968 and designed her first collection in 1973. In 1976 she co-founded the company that became Aeffe with her brother Massimo, and from 1981 the label showed its seasonal collections in Milan. The Ferretti Jeans Philosophy line followed in 1989 and was renamed Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti in 1994, the same year the brand expanded abroad with a building in New York.
In September 2024 Alberta Ferretti announced she would step back from creative direction after 41 years, while remaining on Aeffe's board. Lorenzo Serafini, who had led the Philosophy line, now leads the creative direction, and from autumn 2025 Philosophy was merged into the Alberta Ferretti collection.
Products and positioning
The brand sits in the luxury segment with a focus on womenswear. Key categories include:
- Evening and cocktail dresses, often in chiffon, sequins and lightweight fabrics
- Ready-to-wear and accessories
- Fragrance, with a first women's scent launched in 2009
- Childrenswear produced through licensing partners
Business model and distribution
Alberta Ferretti is designed and produced within Aeffe's vertically organised structure in Italy. It is sold through freestanding boutiques, shop-in-shops such as those at Bergdorf Goodman in New York, wholesale partners and the brand's own online store. The house has also worked on licensing deals and special projects, including Alitalia staff uniforms in 2018 and a limited-edition Lancia Ypsilon in 2022.
Why it matters
Alberta Ferretti illustrates the transition many founder-led Italian houses face as the original designer steps back. Its integration of the Philosophy line into one brand reflects a wider industry move towards fewer, stronger labels.
