What is Missoni?
Missoni is an Italian luxury house based in the province of Varese, north of Milan. It is defined by knitwear in bold colour combinations and its signature zigzag pattern, applied to clothing for women, men and children as well as to home textiles and furniture. The company operates as Missoni S.p.A. and is one of the few major Italian fashion houses still controlled by its founding family.
History
Ottavio (Tai) and Rosita Missoni opened a small knitwear workshop in Gallarate in 1953 and showed the first collection under the Missoni label in Milan in 1958. A 1967 show at the Pitti Palace in Florence drew wide attention, and in 1969 the company built a new factory in Sumirago. Control passed to the founders' three children in 1996, and Angela Missoni led the main label from 1997 until 2021, before becoming president.
In 2018 the Italian state-backed investment fund Fondo Strategico Italiano (FSI) acquired a 41.2% stake, leaving the family with 58.8%. Alberto Caliri, a long-time member of the design team, took over the women's line in 2021 and was reappointed creative director in October 2024 after the departure of Filippo Grazioli.
Products and positioning
Missoni sits in the luxury segment with knitwear as its core. The range includes ready-to-wear, beachwear, accessories and childrenswear, plus Missoni Home, which covers bed and bath textiles, rugs, wallpaper, cushions and outdoor furniture. The Missoni Sport line was relaunched in 2022 with a focus on comfort and wellness.
Business model and distribution
The house sells through its own boutiques, its e-commerce site and selected wholesale partners. Licensing plays an important role across categories:
- Eyewear licensed to Safilo (agreement signed 2018)
- Watches licensed to Timex Group (2019)
- Childrenswear produced under licence by Simonetta (2022)
- Fragrance licensed to Estée Lauder
The brand has also extended into hospitality and real estate, including the Missoni Baia residential project in Miami.
Why it matters
Missoni shows how a single, instantly recognisable textile signature can carry a brand across fashion, home and licensing. Its ownership structure, with a family majority and a state-backed minority investor, makes it a reference case for independent Italian houses seeking capital while keeping control.
