Ottavio Missoni

Co-founder of Missoni

Ottavio Missoni (1921 to 2013) was the Italian designer and former Olympic athlete who, with his wife Rosita, founded the Missoni fashion house. As its colourist and pattern designer, he created the multicoloured zigzag, stripe and wave knits that made Missoni one of the most recognisable names in Italian fashion.

Who was Ottavio Missoni?

Ottavio "Tai" Missoni was born in Dubrovnik in 1921 and died in 2013. Before fashion, he was an athlete: he joined Italy's national track team in 1937, won the national 400 metre hurdles title four times and competed at the 1948 London Olympics, where he finished sixth. He went on to co-found Missoni, the knitwear house that became a symbol of Italian colour and craft.

Career

After the Second World War, Missoni set up an activewear business with his teammate Giorgio Oberweger, producing wool tracksuits with zipped legs, a detail he is credited with inventing. He also designed knitted tracksuits for the Italian team at the 1948 Games.

In 1953 he married Rosita Jelmini, from a textile family, and the couple established a machine-knitting workshop, Maglificio Jolly. Their breakthrough came in 1958, when the Milan department store La Rinascente displayed the first garments carrying the Missoni label: colourful, vertically striped shirt dresses. Key steps followed:

  • 1966: introduction of ready-to-wear collections
  • 1975: exhibitions of Ottavio's work as art, including in Venice
  • 1976: opening of the first Missoni shop
  • 1997: the business passed to the couple's three children

Ottavio served as the house's colourist and pattern designer, creating multicoloured zigzag, stripe, check and wave patterns in unexpected colour combinations.

Influence on the fashion business

The Missonis showed that knitwear made on industrial machines could be treated as high fashion. Their mastery of machines able to produce complex patterns, combined with Ottavio's sense of colour, turned a technical production capability into a distinctive brand signature. The house later expanded from womenswear into home furnishings, theatre costumes and even car interiors, an early example of a fashion name stretched into a lifestyle brand.

The company remained a family business for decades, with the next generation, including Angela Missoni, taking creative leadership after the founders stepped back.

Why it matters

Ottavio Missoni's career is a reminder that production technology and design identity can be the same thing. For brands, Missoni's recognisable patterns illustrate how a strong visual code, rooted in a specific manufacturing know-how, can sustain a label across generations and product categories.
