Who is Angela Missoni?

Angela Missoni was born in Milan in 1958 into one of Italy's best-known fashion families. Her parents, Ottavio and Rosita Missoni, founded the Missoni label in 1953 and made its colourful knits, zigzags and space-dyed patterns famous around the world. Angela represents the second generation of the family business.

Career

Before taking charge of the family house, Angela Missoni started her own line in 1993. In 1997 she succeeded her parents as creative director of Missoni, a role she held for 24 years. During that period she refreshed the label's knitwear heritage for new audiences, combining the house's signature patterns with more contemporary silhouettes.

  • 1993: launches her own line
  • 1997: becomes creative director of Missoni
  • 2011: Missoni for Target collaboration sells out in less than 24 hours
  • 2018: Fondo Strategico Italiano acquires a 41.2 per cent stake as part of a reorganisation
  • May 2021: steps down as creative director and becomes president

In May 2021 she announced that she would step down as creative director after the Autumn/Winter 2021 collection and become president of Missoni. Alberto Caliri, who had worked at the company for 24 years and served as design director since 2009, took over creative direction. It was the first time the creative lead of Missoni passed outside the family.

Influence on the fashion business

Under Angela Missoni the brand reached a mass audience through one of the most talked-about designer collaborations of its era. The Missoni for Target collection in September 2011 sold out in less than 24 hours, an early demonstration of the commercial power of high and low partnerships between designer brands and large retailers.

Her tenure also coincided with a change in ownership. In 2018 the Italian investment fund Fondo Strategico Italiano acquired 41.2 per cent of the company as part of a plan to reposition the brand and broaden its range of products and price points, showing how family-owned Italian houses have turned to outside capital to finance growth.

Why it matters

Angela Missoni's career illustrates generational succession in a family fashion business: from founders to children, and then to a professional creative team supported by outside investors. Her work kept one of Italy's most recognisable knitwear signatures relevant for more than two decades.
