Who is Amancio Ortega?
Amancio Ortega Gaona, born in 1936, is the founder of Inditex, the Spanish group behind Zara, Massimo Dutti, Pull&Bear and other brands. He built the company from a small clothing workshop in Galicia into one of the most influential retailers in the world, and his approach to design, production and distribution changed how the mass market fashion industry operates.
Career
Ortega began working in the clothing trade as a teenager in A Coruna. In 1963 he founded Confecciones Goa, a manufacturer of bathrobes. In 1975 he opened the first Zara store in A Coruna, and in 1985 he created Inditex (Industria de Diseno Textil) as the holding company for the growing business.
Inditex listed on the Spanish stock exchange in 2001. By 2008 Britannica describes it as the world's largest fashion retailer, with around 4,000 stores in 70 countries. Ortega served as chairman until 2011, when he stepped down and was succeeded by Pablo Isla, then vice chairman and chief executive. His daughter Marta Ortega became chair of Inditex in 2022.
Ortega remains Inditex's largest shareholder, and he chairs Pontegadea, the investment company that manages his holdings.
Influence on the fashion business
Ortega is widely credited as the pioneer of what became known as fast fashion. Instead of committing to large seasonal collections months in advance, Zara relied on trend spotting, in-house design and highly efficient manufacturing to deliver new styles to stores within a few weeks. Inditex also kept a significant share of production close to its headquarters in Spain rather than outsourcing all of it to distant low-cost countries.
- Vertical integration: design, production, logistics and retail managed within one group.
- Speed to market: short lead times and frequent small deliveries to stores.
- Proximity sourcing: a large share of production kept in Spain.
Why it matters
The Zara model became a benchmark studied by business schools and copied, in different forms, by competitors around the world. It shifted the industry's focus from forecasting fashion seasons in advance to responding quickly to what customers were actually buying. Ortega himself has remained notably private and has avoided publicity throughout his career, yet the system he built continues to shape supply chain, retail and merchandising decisions across the global fashion business.
