What is Zara?
Zara is a fashion retailer for women, men and children and the largest brand of Inditex, the group headquartered in Arteixo, Galicia. Inditex is chaired by Marta Ortega (since April 2022) and run by chief executive Óscar García Maceiras (since November 2021). Zara is known for bringing new styles to its stores within weeks rather than months.
History
Amancio Ortega and Rosalía Mera opened the first store in A Coruña in 1975; the name was originally meant to be Zorba. Ortega had founded his first garment factory, Confecciones Goa, in 1972, and Zara opened its own factory in 1980. During the 1980s the company invested in information technology to shorten the path from design to store. International expansion began in the late 1980s, and Zara launched e-commerce in 2010. In March 2026 Zara announced a two-year creative partnership with John Galliano, who will rework pieces from Zara's archive, with a first collection planned for September 2026.
Products and positioning
Zara offers trend-led womenswear, menswear and childrenswear, plus shoes, bags and accessories, at mid-market prices. Since the 2020s the brand has moved towards a more elevated image through editorial campaigns, premium capsule lines and designer collaborations.
Business model and distribution
Zara's model rests on control of design, production and distribution:
- Proximity sourcing: about half of its merchandise, mainly the most fashion-sensitive items, is made in company-owned factories in Spain, northern Portugal and Turkey, while basics are sourced largely from Asia.
- Speed: design-to-store cycles of a few weeks allow frequent small drops based on sales data.
- Stores and online: Inditex has been reducing Zara's store count in favour of fewer, larger stores integrated with online sales.
The brand has historically spent little on traditional advertising, relying on store locations and windows instead.
Why it matters
Zara defined fast fashion as a business model and is still the benchmark for responsive supply chains in apparel. Its success turned Inditex into the world's largest fashion retailer, with group sales of 38.6 billion euros in 2024 according to its published figures. Its approach to data-driven assortment planning, near-shore production and integrated store and online stock is studied across the industry.
