What is Bershka?

Bershka is a fast fashion brand owned by Inditex, the Spanish group that also owns Zara and Pull&Bear. It is aimed at a young customer and focuses on street style, music and digital culture. The brand is based near Barcelona, unlike most Inditex brands, which are headquartered in Galicia.

History

Inditex launched Bershka in April 1998 as a new concept for younger shoppers, at a time when the group was building a portfolio of brands around Zara. The brand grew rapidly in Spain and then internationally across Europe, the Middle East, Latin America and Asia. In August 2022 Bershka, Pull&Bear and Stradivarius closed their physical stores and Tmall shops in China, and Inditex stopped trading in Russia the same year.

Products and positioning

Bershka sells womenswear and menswear, denim, shoes and accessories, with an emphasis on fast-moving trends and collaborations with music and entertainment brands. Prices are among the lowest in the Inditex portfolio. Store design and marketing lean heavily on music, social media and youth culture, reflecting its target audience.

Business model and distribution

Bershka draws on Inditex's integrated supply chain, which allows frequent deliveries of new styles and quick reaction to sales. Wikipedia lists 971 locations in 2021 and more than 850 stores in 74 countries in early 2022, while Inditex's more recent brand table shows about 850 stores. The brand is said to contribute around 10 percent of group sales. It sells through:

  • Own stores, mostly in shopping centres.
  • Franchised stores in some markets, following Inditex practice.
  • Its own website and app.

Why it matters

Bershka is one of the main vehicles through which Inditex reaches Gen Z customers, a group that increasingly discovers fashion on social platforms and is targeted by online-only competitors. Its performance is therefore a useful indicator of how traditional store-based fast fashion holds up against digital-native rivals in the youngest segment of the market.
