What is Marni?
Marni is an Italian luxury brand that describes its style as an unpredictable visual language built on mixed prints, unusual materials and artistic shapes. It designs womenswear, menswear, bags, shoes and accessories, and is part of OTB, the group that also owns Diesel, Maison Margiela and Jil Sander.
History
Consuelo Castiglioni founded Marni in Milan in 1994 as an offshoot of her family's fur business. The first boutique opened in London in 1999, followed by New York, Paris and Tokyo. OTB acquired 60% of the company in 2012 and the remaining stake in 2015. The Castiglioni family left in 2016.
Francesco Risso led the creative direction from 2016 to 2025. In July 2025 OTB appointed Meryll Rogge as creative director, while Stefano Rosso has served as chief executive since 2024.
Products and positioning
Marni sits in the luxury segment with a more artistic, less logo-driven profile than many peers. Alongside ready-to-wear, leather goods and footwear, it has extended into homeware, with tableware and wallpaper presented during Milan Design Week in 2023. Several categories are developed with licensing partners:
- Eyewear with Retrosuperfuture (from 2021)
- Childrenswear through OTB's Brave Kid
- Fragrance and cosmetics with Coty under a licence running to 2040, with first products due in 2026
Business model and distribution
According to OTB, Marni operates 96 stores worldwide, including a flagship on Via Montenapoleone in Milan conceived as an installation space for rotating artists. The brand also sells through high-end department stores, multi-brand retailers and its own e-commerce. Menswear has been produced and distributed by OTB's manufacturing arm Staff International since 2015.
Why it matters
Marni shows how a mid-sized luxury house can keep a distinct creative identity inside a multi-brand group. Its new creative leadership and long-term beauty licence make it one to watch as OTB develops its luxury portfolio.
