Who was Franco Moschino?

Franco Moschino was an Italian fashion designer, born in 1950 and died in 1994. He founded Moschino, a house known for playful, provocative designs that questioned luxury, status and consumerism while still selling to a fashionable clientele. His work made irony a commercial proposition.

Career

Moschino studied fine art at the Brera Academy in Milan and also took fashion courses at the Istituto Marangoni. During the 1970s he worked for several years as an illustrator for Gianni Versace, an experience that gave him an insider's view of the Milanese fashion industry.

From 1977 to 1982 he designed for the Italian label Cadette. In 1983 he founded his own company, initially with a focus on casualwear and denim, and quickly expanded into a full fashion house. In 1988 he launched the diffusion line Cheap and Chic, whose name summed up his attitude. The brand grew to include lingerie, eveningwear, menswear, footwear and fragrances.

After his death in 1994, his long-time assistant Rossella Jardini took over creative direction. In October 2013 the American designer Jeremy Scott became creative director, reviving the founder's taste for pop culture and satire. The house, now part of the Italian group Aeffe, appointed the Argentine designer Adrian Appiolaza as creative director in 2024.

Influence on the fashion business

Moschino's designs often carried slogans and visual jokes aimed at the industry, such as garments that parodied famous luxury brands or decorated classic shapes with unexpected objects. His legacy for the business of fashion includes:

  • Proof that humour and critique can be a strong brand identity
  • An early example of a designer diffusion line with its own personality
  • Expansion from clothing into licensing and fragrance
  • A house identity strong enough to outlive its founder

Celebrities from Madonna to Princess Diana wore his designs, helping take an anti-establishment message into the mainstream.

Critics often compared him with Jean Paul Gaultier, but Moschino tended to work with basic forms and traditional construction, placing the provocation in details, slogans and context. A quilted black denim miniskirt with plastic fried eggs on the hem is a typical example of how he turned familiar garments into commentary.

Why it matters

Franco Moschino showed that a fashion brand could criticise excess while thriving commercially. His approach anticipated later trends in which irony, slogans and references to luxury branding became central to how fashion communicates, especially in the age of social media.
