Who is Daniel Ervér?

Daniel Ervér is a Swedish retail executive and, since 31 January 2024, president and chief executive of H&M Group, the company behind H&M, COS, Weekday, & Other Stories, ARKET and H&M Home. He succeeded Helena Helmersson and kept operational responsibility for the H&M brand alongside the group role.

Career

Ervér holds a degree in business administration from the University of Gothenburg, including an exchange at ESSEC Business School in Paris. He joined H&M in 2005 as a summer trainee and worked his way through the business as a controller, in merchandising roles in Germany and the United States, as country manager for Sweden, as purchasing manager and in leadership roles for the women's and men's collections.

Around 2020 he was appointed head of the H&M brand, the group's largest business, a role he held for about four years. On 31 January 2024 the board announced his appointment as group chief executive with immediate effect. At the time H&M Group said he had been with the company for eighteen years.

Influence on the fashion business

Ervér took charge at a time when H&M was working to improve profitability and strengthen its brand against fast growing competitors. His background in merchandising and buying has shaped a strategy built around product and customer experience.

  • Strengthening the H&M brand's fashion credibility and marketing
  • Improving gross margins and cost efficiency
  • Renewing stores and the online experience
  • Continued work on supply chain efficiency and sustainability targets

The group's portfolio spans several brands with distinct positioning, from the mass market H&M brand to the more premium COS and ARKET, and part of the chief executive's task is balancing investment across them.

As a leader who grew up inside the company, he represents continuity with H&M's culture while being tasked with changing how the business competes in a crowded mass market.

Why it matters

H&M Group is one of the largest fashion retailers in the world and a bellwether for European mass market apparel. The direction set under Ervér, from product and pricing to sourcing and sustainability, affects suppliers, landlords and wholesale partners across many markets, and the group's results are closely compared with those of Inditex and other competitors.
