Who is José Antonio Ramos Calamonte?

José Antonio Ramos Calamonte is the chief executive of ASOS, one of Europe's largest online fashion retailers. He was promoted from chief commercial officer to chief executive in June 2022, joining the board at the same time, as the company announced a new chair, Jørgen Lindemann. In September 2026 he was still presenting the group's results as chief executive.

Career

Ramos Calamonte began his career at McKinsey and then spent nearly two decades in retail, holding commercial strategy roles at several major groups:

  • McKinsey: early career in consulting
  • Inditex, Esprit and Carrefour Spain: commercial and strategy roles
  • Salsa Jeans: chief executive of the Portuguese fashion company for about two years
  • January 2021: chief commercial officer of ASOS, leading design, sourcing, buying, merchandising and ASOS Studios with a team of more than 1,000 people
  • Since June 2022: chief executive of ASOS

On his appointment ASOS described him as an experienced international retailer with deep multichannel experience and a track record of driving innovation.

Influence on the fashion business

Ramos Calamonte moved into the top job directly from running the commercial side of ASOS, where he had overseen design, sourcing, buying, merchandising and ASOS Studios. That background has shaped a tenure in which product, margin and the quality of the commercial offer have been at the centre of the group's public reporting.

By the end of the 2026 financial year, ASOS reported adjusted EBITDA in the upper half of its guided range. Ramos Calamonte said the group had delivered sequential improvement in quarterly gross merchandise value growth and a gross margin above its 50 per cent medium term target.

José Antonio Ramos Calamonte and technology

ASOS is a pure play online retailer, so data, logistics and digital merchandising are central to its operating model. As chief commercial officer, Ramos Calamonte was responsible for the buying and merchandising functions that rely on online demand signals, and as chief executive he has led the business through a reshaping of its product and stock strategy on that basis.

Why it matters

ASOS is a bellwether for online fashion retail in Europe. Ramos Calamonte's experience, spanning Inditex's fast fashion model, branded denim and online retail, makes his turnaround of ASOS a closely watched test of whether a pure play fashion platform can return to sustainable profitability in a market reshaped by ultra fast fashion competitors.
