Who is Lotta Volkova?

Lotta Volkova, born in 1984 in the Soviet Union, is a fashion stylist and creative consultant based in Paris. She is best known for her role in the rise of Vetements and in the early collections of Balenciaga under Demna, and later as a styling consultant to Miu Miu. Her aesthetic draws on punk, New Wave and post-Soviet youth culture, and it became one of the defining looks of fashion in the second half of the 2010s.

Career

At 17 Volkova moved to London to study art and design at Central Saint Martins. Around 2004 she founded Lotta Skeletrix, a label with punk and New Wave influences that was stocked by Dover Street Market. In the late 2000s she moved to Paris and turned her focus to styling, receiving an early photo shoot commission from the photographer Ellen von Unwerth.

At Vetements she contributed to styling and casting and consulted on collections, and she also styled Demna's first collections at Balenciaga. Both relationships ended in 2017. She went on to work with clients including Miu Miu, where she has been a styling consultant working with Miuccia Prada since the early 2020s, Blumarine under creative director Nicola Brognano, Sies Marjan and Mulberry. In 2020 she designed a capsule collection for Adidas, and in 2022 she created a collection with Jean Paul Gaultier. Her editorial styling has appeared in System, Dazed, i-D and 032c.

Influence on the fashion business

Volkova is a leading example of how the role of the stylist has expanded from dressing models for shoots into shaping entire brand directions. Her influence includes:

  • Bringing street casting and subcultural references into luxury runway shows
  • Helping define the oversized, ironic aesthetic associated with Vetements and Balenciaga in the mid 2010s
  • Contributing to the visibility of Miu Miu following its widely praised Spring/Summer 2022 show
  • Moving between styling, consulting and design collaborations with major brands

Why it matters

For fashion businesses, Volkova's career shows the commercial weight of the stylist and consultant as a creative function. Many brands now rely on external stylists to shape shows, campaigns and casting, and her work with Vetements, Balenciaga and Miu Miu illustrates how that input can affect brand perception and desirability. Her collaborations with Adidas and Jean Paul Gaultier also reflect the growing role of named creatives in limited edition product launches.
