Who is Remo Ruffini?
Remo Ruffini is the executive chairman of Moncler, the Milan listed luxury group behind the Moncler and Stone Island brands. He took over the then struggling down jacket maker in 2003 and led it as chairman and chief executive for more than 20 years. In January 2026 Moncler announced that, effective 1 April 2026, Bartolomeo Rongone would become group chief executive and Ruffini would become executive chairman, with responsibility for creative direction and a continuing central role in governance and strategy.
Career
Ruffini began his career in New York in his father's clothing business. In 1983 he founded the clothing brand New England in Como, which he sold to the Stefanel group in 2000. He joined Moncler as creative director in 2001 and took control of the company in 2003.
Under his leadership Moncler expanded from a technical skiwear label into a luxury brand with a global store network. Key milestones include:
- the launch of premium lines such as Gamme Rouge, Gamme Bleu and Moncler Grenoble between 2006 and 2010
- the listing of Moncler on the Milan stock exchange in 2013
- the creation of Moncler Genius in 2018, a platform of rotating designer collaborations
- the acquisition of Stone Island, agreed in December 2020 and completed in 2021
Influence on the fashion business
Ruffini is widely cited as a case study in brand elevation: taking a functional product category, the down jacket, and building a luxury proposition around it through design, retail and storytelling. Moncler Genius, which replaced a traditional fashion show calendar with a sequence of collaborations and drops, influenced how other brands think about collaborations, community and frequent product releases.
The addition of Stone Island extended the group into contemporary menswear and streetwear culture, while keeping a focus on technical outerwear and research into materials.
Why it matters
Ruffini's move to executive chairman in 2026 marks a planned leadership transition at one of Europe's most successful independent luxury groups. Announcing it, he said: "We made a forward-looking decision that I see as a natural evolution of our corporate organization, also in view of a possible generational succession in the future." How Moncler balances founder-led creative control with a separate chief executive will be watched closely across the luxury sector.
