What is Moncler?
Moncler is a luxury brand best known for down jackets and outerwear, with collections for women, men and children as well as knitwear, footwear and accessories. It is the main brand of Moncler Group, which also owns Stone Island and is listed on the Milan stock exchange.
History
René Ramillon and André Vincent founded the company in 1952 in Monestier-de-Clermont, a mountain village near Grenoble whose name gave the brand its own. Moncler first made equipment and quilted jackets for mountaineers and skiers. Remo Ruffini bought the company in 2003, moved it to Milan and repositioned it as a luxury brand. Moncler listed in Milan in December 2013 and acquired Stone Island for €1.15 billion in a deal agreed in December 2020.
Products and positioning
Moncler combines technical outerwear with luxury pricing and fashion collaborations. Moncler Genius, launched in February 2018, invites a rotating group of designers and creative partners to reinterpret the brand, replacing a traditional single runway schedule with a series of drops.

Business model and distribution
The group sells in more than 70 countries through directly operated physical and digital stores, complemented by selected multi-brand retailers, department stores and online retailers. Since 1 April 2026 Remo Ruffini has been executive chairman, with responsibility for creative direction and strategy, and Bartolomeo Rongone has been group chief executive. Group revenue was about €3.13 billion in 2025.
Why it matters
Moncler is one of the clearest examples of a functional heritage brand repositioned as luxury. Its shift to direct retail, its drop-based Genius model and its two-brand structure with Stone Island make it a reference for how a focused group can compete alongside the large multi-brand conglomerates.
