What is Thom Browne?

Thom Browne is a New York based luxury label for men and women covering tailoring, ready-to-wear, footwear, bags, accessories and eyewear. Its founder remains chief creative officer, and the business has been part of the Ermenegildo Zegna Group since 2018.

History

Thom Browne started the business in 2001 with five suits sold by appointment from a small shop in Manhattan's West Village. Menswear followed in 2003 and womenswear in 2011. In 2018 Zegna bought 85 per cent of the company in a deal reported at US$500 million and later increased its stake to 92 per cent in 2024, with the founder keeping the remainder. Sam Lobban became chief executive in September 2025, succeeding Rodrigo Bazan.

Products and positioning

The brand reworks classic American tailoring through proportion, with shorter jackets and cropped trousers, most famously in medium grey wool. Every piece carries a red, white and blue grosgrain tab, and the four-bar stripe is a recurring code. In 2023 a US jury rejected adidas's claim that the four-bar design infringed its three-stripe trademark. The brand showed its first couture collection in Paris in 2023.

Business model and distribution

According to the Zegna Group, Thom Browne is sold in more than 300 department store and specialty boutique doors in 40 countries and operates 78 retail stores, flagships and shop-in-shops in cities including New York, London, Milan, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai. The brand has a strong wholesale component alongside its own retail network.

Why it matters

Thom Browne shows how a strong, consistent design signature can turn a niche tailoring label into a global brand. Its growth within the Zegna Group also illustrates how a family-controlled European group can scale an American designer brand while leaving creative control with the founder, who also chairs the CFDA.

Frequently asked questions

Who owns Thom Browne?

Thom Browne has been majority owned by the Italian Ermenegildo Zegna Group since 2018, with the group's stake rising to 92 per cent in 2024. The founder retains a minority stake and remains chief creative officer.

Why does Thom Browne have four stripes?

The brand originally used three bars but switched to four after adidas objected in 2007. In 2023 a US jury found that the four-bar design did not infringe adidas's trademark.
