What is Brioni?
Brioni is an Italian luxury menswear house specialising in tailoring, from ready-to-wear suits to made-to-measure. It is part of Kering's fashion and leather goods division. Federico Arrigoni has been chief executive since May 2025.
History
Nazareno Fonticoli and Gaetano Savini opened the first Brioni store on Via Barberini in Rome in 1945. In 1952 Brioni staged what is regarded as the first menswear runway show, at Palazzo Pitti in Florence. The company opened its factory in Penne, Abruzzo, in 1959 and founded the Scuola di Alta Sartoria there in 1985 to train tailors. PPR, renamed Kering in 2013, bought the brand in 2011. Norbert Stumpfl was appointed design director in 2018. Brioni introduced its first womenswear collection in 2024.
Products and positioning
- Tailoring: suits, tuxedos and jackets, largely handmade.
- Made-to-measure and bespoke services.
- Ready-to-wear, knitwear, shoes, leather goods and eyewear.
- Fragrance, launched in 2014 with Firmenich.
Business model and distribution
Brioni sells through its own boutiques and e-commerce, as well as luxury department stores and selected wholesale partners, such as a 2025 capsule with Mr Porter. Production is centred on its own workshops in Penne. Kering's restructuring under chief executive Luca de Meo groups Brioni with Gucci, Saint Laurent, Bottega Veneta, Balenciaga and McQueen in one fashion division.
Brioni has dressed many public figures and supplied suits for several James Bond films, which helped make its name internationally known. Its emphasis on handwork and long apprenticeships reflects the Roman tailoring tradition from which it emerged.
Why it matters
Brioni is one of the best-known names in Italian formal tailoring and a reference for in-house craft training. Its place in Kering shows how luxury groups use specialist menswear houses alongside larger fashion brands.
