What is Loro Piana?

Loro Piana is a luxury brand and textile producer specialising in the world's finest fibres, above all cashmere and vicuña. It makes ready-to-wear, knitwear, shoes, leather goods and accessories, and also sells fabrics. LVMH has owned a majority since 2013, and Frédéric Arnault has been chief executive since 2025. Pier Luigi Loro Piana retains a minority stake and the title of deputy chairman.

History

The Loro Piana family traded wool from the early 1800s, and engineer Pietro Loro Piana founded the company in Quarona in 1924. Franco Loro Piana led it from the 1940s, and brothers Sergio and Pier Luigi from the 1970s, expanding from fabrics into finished goods. The brand began working with vicuña in 1994, signed a sourcing agreement with Peru in 1997 and opened its first store in Milan in 1998. LVMH bought 80% in 2013 and later raised its stake. The company celebrated its centenary in 2024.

Products and positioning

Loro Piana is a byword for understated, logo-free luxury. Raw materials are central: cashmere from northern China and Mongolia, vicuña from South America, extra-fine merino from Australia and New Zealand, and lotus flower fibre from Myanmar. The Roadster jacket, launched in 2004, is one of its signature pieces.

Business model and distribution

The house is vertically integrated. According to LVMH it operates 10 owned production sites in Italy and about 180 stores worldwide, producing around 4 million metres of fabric a year. Its headquarters has been in Milan's Brera district since 2022. In July 2025 a Milan court briefly placed the company under judicial administration over labour conditions at a supplier's subcontractors; Loro Piana ended the relationship and the measure was lifted early.

Why it matters

Loro Piana shows the value of controlling rare raw materials and the full textile chain. It has become one of LVMH's key brands in the market for discreet, high-quality luxury.

Frequently asked questions

LVMH has owned a majority of Loro Piana since 2013, when it bought 80% of the company. Pier Luigi Loro Piana keeps a minority stake and serves as deputy chairman.

Why is Loro Piana so expensive?

Loro Piana uses some of the rarest fibres available, such as vicuña and fine cashmere, and controls much of its production in its own Italian mills. Its products are made in Italy and sold with a deliberately understated image.
