How is AI search changing the way shoppers find fashion?

Shoppers now describe what they want to chatbots and AI search engines instead of typing keywords. How conversational shopping works, what the early evidence shows and what it means for fashion brands and retailers.

KEY TAKEAWAYS Summary by the editors

  1. Conversational shopping lets customers describe needs in natural language, and an AI system interprets the request, searches product data and returns a curated answer.
  2. McKinsey's State of Fashion 2026 names "the AI shopper" as a key theme and notes that customers are turning to large language models to search for products, compare offerings and receive tailored recommendations.
  3. Google announced AI Mode shopping features in May 2025, including a visual product panel and agentic checkout that can buy an item when it reaches a price the user sets.
  4. OpenAI launched Instant Checkout in ChatGPT in September 2025; trade press reported in March 2026 that it was replaced by a model based on retailer-run apps inside ChatGPT, illustrating how fast this market is changing.
  5. Structured, complete and accurate product data is the main lever brands control in AI-driven discovery.

AI search is changing fashion discovery by letting shoppers describe what they need in plain language, such as an outfit for a specific occasion, and receive a curated selection instead of a list of links or a grid of products. This shifts influence towards whoever controls the AI interface and rewards brands whose product data is complete, accurate and machine-readable.

What is conversational shopping?

Conversational shopping is product search and discovery through dialogue. Instead of entering "black midi dress" and applying filters, a shopper writes "I need something elegant but comfortable for an outdoor wedding in September, under 200 euros" and refines the answer through follow-up questions. A large language model interprets the request, translates it into structured queries, retrieves products and explains its choices.

This happens in three places: on retailers' own sites and apps, on general AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Gemini, and inside search engines that now blend AI-generated answers with product listings. McKinsey's State of Fashion 2026 report puts this at the centre of its "AI shopper" theme, stating that AI is already disrupting how consumers discover fashion and that autonomous AI shopping agents may in future act on consumers' behalf, from monitoring prices to buying products.

How do AI shopping assistants work?

Under the surface, most assistants follow a similar pattern:

  1. Intent interpretation: the language model extracts occasion, style, budget, size, colour and constraints from the request and conversation history.
  2. Retrieval: the system searches a product index, often combining keyword search, attribute filters and vector search on text and images.
  3. Ranking: results are ordered by relevance and business signals such as availability and price.
  4. Response generation: the model presents a short selection with explanations, and may ask clarifying questions.
  5. Action: increasingly, the assistant can track prices or start checkout.

OpenAI's help documentation, for instance, says ChatGPT product results draw on structured metadata from first-party and third-party providers and consider factors such as price, reviews and availability, and that product results are selected independently and are not ads. The quality of the answer therefore depends heavily on the quality of the data each system can access.

Retailers' own assistants are the most mature for fashion. According to OpenAI's case study, Zalando's assistant launched in 2023 and expanded to all 25 of its markets in 2024, supporting multiple languages and handling requests such as outfit suggestions for events.

Google announced in May 2025 that AI Mode in Search would show a visual panel of products that updates as users refine their queries, and introduced agentic checkout: users can set a target price and, once it is met, Google can add the item to the merchant's cart and complete the purchase with Google Pay after the user confirms.

OpenAI launched Instant Checkout on 29 September 2025, letting US users buy from Etsy sellers in ChatGPT and announcing that Shopify merchants would follow, built on an open Agentic Commerce Protocol developed with Stripe. Merchants were to pay a fee on completed purchases. In March 2026, Shopifreaks, citing reporting by The Information, wrote that OpenAI was replacing Instant Checkout with an app-based model in which retailers run their own storefronts inside ChatGPT, after limited merchant adoption and low conversion. The episode shows how unsettled agentic commerce still is.

For fashion specifically, discovery assistants face harder problems than in many other categories. Style is subjective, sizing differs between brands, and the same item may be described in very different words by different retailers. Assistants that cannot see consistent attributes for fit, fabric and occasion tend to fall back on generic bestsellers, which favours large brands with well-structured data.

What does AI search mean for fashion brands?

  • Fewer clicks, more pre-selection: if an assistant shows three products, being fourth is close to invisible.
  • Data over design: the assistant reads attributes, availability and prices, not the look of a landing page.
  • Third-party control: on external assistants the brand does not control ranking logic, presentation or the customer relationship.
  • New measurement gaps: traffic from AI assistants is harder to attribute, and some purchases may happen without a site visit at all.

McKinsey summarises the marketing consequence bluntly, describing AI chatbot responses as "the new SEO" for fashion retail. For wholesale brands, it also means that product information supplied to retail partners feeds the AI systems those retailers use.

What are the risks and open questions?

AI assistants can misstate prices, availability or product details, and brands remain responsible for what their own assistants say. Third-party agents raise questions about who owns the customer, how returns and disputes are handled and how fees compare with marketplace commissions. There is also concentration risk: if a few AI platforms become the main entry point for product discovery, their policies will shape fashion commerce much as search and social platforms do today.

How should fashion retailers prepare?

Start with product data: audit attribute completeness, sizing information and image quality, and make sure feeds to search engines and marketplaces are current. Test how major assistants describe your products today by asking them realistic shopper questions. If you run your own assistant, restrict it to verified catalogue and policy data and measure conversion and returns against standard search. Treat agentic checkout as an experiment until protocols, fees and consumer adoption settle.

Frequently asked questions

What is conversational shopping in fashion?

It is product discovery through dialogue with an AI assistant. The shopper describes needs in natural language, the assistant interprets them, searches product data and returns a short curated selection, refining it through follow-up questions.

Can ChatGPT buy clothes for me?

OpenAI launched Instant Checkout for US users in September 2025. Trade press reported in March 2026 that OpenAI was moving to retailer-run apps inside ChatGPT instead. Check current availability, as these services change frequently.

How does Google AI Mode affect fashion shopping?

Google announced in May 2025 that AI Mode would show a visual product panel that updates as users refine queries, plus price tracking and an agentic checkout that can complete a purchase after user confirmation. This makes product data quality central to visibility.

How can fashion brands appear in AI shopping results?

By providing complete, accurate and current product data through feeds and well-structured product pages, keeping prices and stock correct, and maintaining genuine reviews. OpenAI says merchants can submit product feeds and that ChatGPT product results are not ads.
