What is A. Caraceni?
A. Caraceni is a bespoke tailoring atelier in Milan, part of the wider Caraceni tailoring family. It is located on the second floor of Via Fatebenefratelli 16, where it has remained since its Milan opening, and has never had a street-level shop window.
History
Augusto Caraceni, whose older brother Domenico established the family name in Rome, opened a shop under his own name in Paris in 1935 at 92 Avenue Iéna. His Paris clients included Josephine Baker and Charles Boyer. He left France in 1940 because of the Second World War and relaunched A. Caraceni in Milan in April 1946. His son Mario Caraceni took over the business in 1972 and kept the A. Caraceni name.
Products and positioning
The house makes bespoke menswear. Augusto prized freedom of movement, holding that a well-made garment should allow the wearer to fence in it, a principle Mario continued. The atelier first served the Italian nobility and later dressed wealthy and well-known clients in the 1950s and 1960s.
Mario Caraceni received the St. Omobono prize from the Milanese Tailors' Guild and a lifetime award from the National Academy of Tailors in Rome.
Why it matters
A. Caraceni is one of the reference names of Milanese bespoke tailoring and an example of a family atelier that has stayed at the same address for decades.
