What is Aerosoles?
Aerosoles is a US footwear brand that has built its identity on blending comfort and fashion, originally offering an affordable, comfortable option for women. It was established in 1987 following the buyout of the What's What division of Kenneth Cole.
History
The company was profitable for decades and at its peak operated a large store network. In September 2017 it filed for Chapter 11 protection and closed most of its 78 stores while keeping its e-commerce and wholesale businesses. Before being acquired, Aerosoles worked with American Exchange Group on a value-priced line for mass and off-price retail. American Exchange completed its purchase of the brand in January 2022 and runs it as a separate division, with plans to widen distribution and move into new categories.
Products and positioning
The brand designs women's shoes, including pumps, flats, sandals and boots, with cushioning and fit as central selling points. In 2025 it launched the Aerosoles Essentials collections, marking close to 40 years in footwear.
Distribution
Aerosoles sells through major retailers including Nordstrom, Macy's, DSW, Zappos and Belk, as well as through its own direct channel.
Why it matters
Aerosoles shows how a store-heavy footwear brand restructured around wholesale and online sales, and how brand management groups acquire established names to extend them into new channels.
